The Medici

The Medici family ruled with immense power across four centuries (1434-1737) originally in Florence and later in a wider sphere of Italy and Europe. They produced four Popes of the Catholic Church, two regent queens of France and grand duchy rulers of Tuscany in the 15th and 16th centuries. One of the wealthiest families in Europe they derived prosperity from banking and textile guilds in Florence. They were also adroit at connecting daughters and sons to the most elite European families by building social networks through marriages of political and financial power embroiling them in complex intrigues and scandals. They’re remembered most favorably for being patrons of art and architecture through the construction of Basilica’s and their support of artists such as Michelangelo, Verrocchio, Botticelli and da Vinci.
