Butterfly

This great purple butterfly,

In the prison of my hands,

Has a learning in his eye

Not a poor fool understands.

~William Butler Yeats

The name Monarch butterfly or Danaus plexippus (meaning sleepy transformation in Greek) alludes to their ability to hibernate and metamorphize. In the fall a special generation of butterflies is born. Unlike preceding, short-lived parents and grandparents, these migrating butterflies survive seven or eight months. In human terms, with an average life span of 75 years, this means these butterflies live to be 525 years old. They perform the miracle of flying from Canada and the U.S. to the center of Mexico and back again. It’s no wonder that butterflies symbolize immortality in world mythologies.
